CSM Certified ScrumMaster

Taught by Jeff Sutherland, Scott Downey, and Dan Greening
February 27-28, 2012 in Los Angeles, CA, United States

In this course, participants will learn how to stop thrashing and start executing along with everything necessary for getting started with Scrum. There are very few rules to Scrum so it is important to learn its fundamental principles by experiencing them directly from those who have implemented the best Scrums in the software industry. Participants gain hands-on practice with the release backlog, sprint backlog, the daily Scrum meeting, tracking progress with a burndown chart, and more. Participants experience the Scrum process through a “59-minute Scrum” and the "XP Game” which simulate Scrum projects through non-technical group exercises.

As the Inventor and Co-Creator of Scrum, Jeff started up the first Scrum team and has been the Agile leader in 8 Scrum companies. His work as coach to 18 startup companies for OpenView Venture Partners will bring unique experience and value to participants of this course.

Scott and Jeff are experts on high performing teams. See their “Hyperproductive Scrum Metrics” :videos.

As the inventor and Co-Creator of Scrum, Jeff Sutherland, is constantly working with industry leaders. The latest information on several key topics will be discussed in this class:
1. Working with Microsoft we now have data showing story point estimation is much better than traditional estimation. The improvement is astonishing!
2. Meeting with Jim Johnson, CEO of the Standish Group, we have learned that he is taking a radical new stance on agile development based on analysis of the past decade of project success/failure data. We will discuss his latest findings.
3. Working with the Lean Enterprise Institute, the founders of the “lean” approach to manufacturing, we have discovered a remarkable connection between the origins of Scrum and lean Japanese teams.

The material describes how to speed up the process of estimating without sacrificing accuracy, identify unhealthy trends, and answers questions such as:

Upon successful completion of this course and ScrumMaster certification exam, each participant will be enrolled as a Certified ScrumMaster, which includes a one-year Scrum Alliance membership, where additional ScrumMaster-only material and information is available.

You can apply for 16 PMP PDUs with the Project Management Institute, satisfying 16 of the required 21 training hours for the new PMI-ACP (PMI-Agile Certified Practitioner)

This course will focus on the ScrumMaster, the Product Owner, and the Team in a software development organization. However, the course is useful to everyone in a company using Scrum. While it will focus on software development, Jeff coaches Scrum teams in sales, marketing, finance, client services, senior management teams, investment groups, and non-profit organizations. You will often find a CEO, CFO, or CEO in this classes, as well as others interested in expanding Scrum throughout their companies. There is a company in Denmark that sends every single employee to the CSM including the receptionists, so everyone knows a common language and can use Scrum to improve operations throughout the company.
